Bwala Defends Al Jazeera Interview, Accuses Anchor of 'Fake News'

Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Media and Policy Communication, Daniel Bwala, has pushed back against widespread criticism of his recent appearance on Al Jazeera's Head to Head programme, dismissing the backlash as short-lived and politically motivated.

In a statement released on Saturday, Bwala expressed no regrets over defending the Tinubu administration during the Thursday interview, hosted by journalist Mehdi Hasan.

The nearly 50-minute discussion, titled “Nigeria: ‘Renewed Hope’ or ‘Hopelessness’?”, focused on the government's record on security, the economy, and corruption.

Hasan repeatedly confronted Bwala with his past statements from the 2023 election period when he supported opposition figure Atiku Abubakar criticizing Tinubu as corrupt and unfit for office.

Bwala described his earlier criticisms as standard “opposition politics,” stating, “It is all politics,” and compared his shift in stance to similar changes by figures in other political contexts.

He insisted defending the president is something he does “with ease and joy” and that he would appear on similar platforms again without hesitation.

Addressing the interview style, Bwala accused Hasan of employing “opposition research-style journalism” and claimed some quotes and references presented from organizations and reports were inaccurate, with others amounting to “outright fake news.”

He said he would address specific inaccuracies later and noted that Al Jazeera never disclosed plans to probe his personal history during months of prior communication, calling it an ethical lapse on their part.

While praising Hasan as “arguably the best debater on the planet,” Bwala said he refused to “swallow the pill” of the approach and welcomed a potential second round to focus on the administration’s policies and achievements rather than his past.

The interview sparked immediate mixed reactions online, particularly on X, with viral clips drawing ridicule from critics who viewed Bwala's responses as evasive or inconsistent. Supporters, however, commended his defense of the government.

Bwala attributed much of the negative feedback to opposition sympathizers, saying their “temporary excitement” would fade and not distract him from his role.
