The Nigerian Army has laid to rest several soldiers killed in action during ongoing counter-insurgency operations in Borno State.
The solemn burial ceremony took place on Friday at the Maimalari Military Cantonment Cemetery in Maiduguri.
It was attended by senior military officers from the Headquarters Theatre Command and 7 Division Nigerian Army, the Commander of 25 Task Force Brigade, Borno State government officials, the Chairman of Damboa Local Government Area, as well as families and next of kin of the deceased.
Lt. Col. Sanni Uba, Media Information Officer of the Joint Task Force North-East Operation Hadin Kai, announced the burial in a statement on Saturday.
Theatre Commander of Operation Hadin Kai, Major General Abdulsalam Abubakar, described the occasion as a somber reminder of the heavy price paid by security forces.
“In the profession of arms, there are moments of victory that fill us with pride... Yet there are also solemn moments that weigh heavily on our hearts and remind us of the true cost of service,” he said.
He praised the fallen soldiers for their “courage, selflessness and unwavering dedication to duty,” calling their loss one felt by “their families... the Nigerian Army, the Armed Forces of Nigeria and the nation at large.”
He assured that the sacrifices “would not be in vain” and that all entitlements due to the deceased would be processed promptly to support their families.Borno State Governor Prof. Babagana Umara Zulum, represented by the Executive Secretary of the Borno State Security Trust Fund, Alhaji Mustapha Ali Yabe, expressed condolences, describing the deaths as “a painful loss to the nation.”
He commended the troops' “gallantry, resilience and commitment” and reaffirmed the state's continued support for the families and the military.
The burials follow recent intensified militant attacks in Borno, including reports of Islamist insurgents killing at least 14 soldiers in separate strikes on army bases in Gwoza district earlier this week.
The ongoing Operation Hadin Kai continues to target remnants of Boko Haram and ISWAP in the region amid persistent security challenges. No specific number of soldiers buried was disclosed in official statements.
