Former presidential media aide Bashir Ahmed has expressed serious concerns over the sincerity of repentance programs for bandits in Nigeria's North-West region, following a deadly reprisal attack that claimed multiple lives in Katsina State.
The incident occurred on Tuesday, March 17, 2026, in Falale village, Jibia Local Government Area. A local vigilante group on patrol intercepted and neutralized three suspected bandits, identified in some reports as "repentant" ones.
In retaliation, armed bandits launched a violent attack on the community, killing at least 15 members of the vigilante group (with some accounts reporting up to 18 deaths).
Reacting to the tragedy via a post on X (formerly Twitter), Bashir Ahmed who served as a media aide to the late former President Muhammadu Buhari questioned the effectiveness and genuineness of pardon initiatives for repentant bandits.
He stated:“I just read a disturbing report that repentant bandits killed 18 members of a vigilante group during an encounter in the Jibia Local Government of Katsina. This reinforces the genuine concern that many who claim repentance do so only as an opportunity to evade justice.”
Ahmed's comments highlight growing skepticism about state-level peace deals in Katsina and other North-West states, where authorities have previously granted pardons to bandits following negotiations in a bid to reduce insecurity.
Critics argue that such programs may allow criminals to regroup or continue operations under the guise of rehabilitation.
The latest violence has shattered a period of relative calm in parts of Katsina and renewed calls for stricter accountability in dealing with armed groups terrorizing communities through kidnappings, killings, and cattle rustling.
No immediate official response from Katsina State authorities has been detailed in reports, though the incident underscores persistent challenges in addressing banditry through dialogue rather than decisive security measures.
Public safety advocates continue to urge thorough vetting and monitoring of any individuals claiming repentance to prevent such reprisals.
