APC National Secretary Hints at Another Opposition Governor Defecting Soon

The All Progressives Congress (APC) is on track to control 31 states after the recent defection of Adamawa Governor Ahmadu Fintiri, with National Secretary Senator Ajibola Basiru indicating that another opposition governor is expected to join the party in the coming one to two weeks.

Speaking on the party's momentum, Basiru said: “With Governor Fintiri, the APC has 30 states, and hopefully, in the next one to two weeks, it will be 31 states.”

He described the influx of defectors as proof of widespread support for the APC’s vision and stressed the party’s aim to become a true national platform that reduces partisan divisions and prioritises governance.

“Our goal is to create a pan-political party. And we thank Nigerian people that we are achieving that one,” Basiru stated.

He added: “We want to have a consensus of opinion to develop Nigeria. And when you have already been able to edge out divisive tendencies that partisan politicking gives, you will be able to concentrate very well on governance.”

The statement follows Governor Fintiri’s high-profile move from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the APC, which strengthened the ruling party’s dominance across most of Nigeria’s 36 states and the FCT.

While no specific governor or state was named, the comment highlights the APC’s strategy to attract prominent opposition figures ahead of the 2027 elections as part of its Renewed Hope Agenda.

The development has sparked renewed debate about the opposition’s future and the possibility of even greater political consolidation under the ruling party.
