APC Convention: NASS Leaders Push for Automatic Tickets

The leadership of Nigeria’s National Assembly on Friday intensified calls for automatic tickets for serving APC lawmakers, arguing that the move is essential to sustain President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s ongoing reforms.

The demand was a major highlight at the All Progressives Congress (APC) 4th Elective National Convention held at Eagle Square, Abuja, where party stakeholders gathered to elect new national officers and shape the party’s future direction.

Speaking on behalf of APC caucuses in both chambers, House of Representatives Speaker Tajudeen Abbas said granting automatic return tickets to performing legislators would promote continuity, stability, and effective implementation of the Renewed Hope Agenda.

Abbas noted that the National Assembly has played a key role in advancing critical reforms of the Tinubu administration, including fiscal and electoral changes.

He warned that fresh internal contests could distract lawmakers from their duties.“The stability of the legislature is critical to sustaining the reform process. Automatic tickets will allow lawmakers to focus on delivering on their mandate without the distractions of internal party contests,” he said.

He added that the proposal should be seen as a strategic mechanism to deepen governance and ensure policy consistency during this period of major economic and institutional reforms.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio aligned with the Speaker’s position, stressing the need for legislative continuity. He commended the smooth organisation of the convention and the wide participation of delegates from all states, the FCT, and the diaspora.

Akpabio highlighted key achievements of the Tinubu administration, such as education financing through NELFUND, agricultural initiatives, rail transport expansion, and infrastructure projects like the coastal highway.

He praised President Tinubu’s leadership and reaffirmed the National Assembly’s continued support for the executive.“When the National Assembly is stable, Nigeria is better off,” Akpabio stated.

The call for automatic tickets also received support from other stakeholders, including former governors, who emphasised that leadership continuity is vital to preserving the APC’s gains.

President Tinubu, while not directly addressing the proposal, repeatedly stressed party unity, discipline, and the need to sustain reforms.“Our greatest strength has never been our size, but our unity,” Tinubu said.

The President also paid tribute to the late former President Muhammadu Buhari, with delegates observing a minute of silence in his honour.

Despite the momentum, some party members cautioned against undermining internal democracy, stressing the need for transparent candidate selection processes.

The convention continues with high-level consultations expected to produce key resolutions for the party’s direction.
