Akpabio, senators pay condolence visit to Mpigi’s widow in Abuja

President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, on Tuesday, led a delegation of federal lawmakers on a condolence visit to the family of their late colleague, Barinada Mpigi, at his Abuja residence.

The visit, disclosed in a statement by Akpabio’s Special Assistant on Media, Jackson Udom, comes two weeks after Mpigi’s death in a London hospital at the age of 64 following a brief illness.

Until his demise, Mpigi represented Rivers South East Senatorial District in the Senate.

In his brief condolence message during the visit, Akpabio described the late lawmaker’s passing as a painful loss to the National Assembly and the nation.

“Senator Mpigi was a dedicated public servant who contributed meaningfully to legislative development and nation-building.

“He was committed to the welfare of his constituents, and his passion for service would not be forgotten. His legacy would continue to inspire younger generations of leaders,” he stated.

The Senate President urged the bereaved family to take solace in the impactful life their father lived, assuring them that the Senate and the entire National Assembly share in their grief.

Akpabio also prayed for the repose of the soul of the deceased and for strength for the family and loved ones to bear the irreplaceable loss.

The Senate’s visit comes barely one week after the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, led a high-powered delegation of Rivers State leaders to London to commiserate with Mpigi’s family.

Members of that delegation included Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Martin Amaewhule; Senators Magnus Abe, Allwell Onyesoh, and Olaka Nwogu; Rivers State PDP Chairman Aaron Chukwuemeka; Felix Nweke; Kenneth Chikere; and Hon. Dum Deekor.

Speaking during the London visit, Wike said the delegation was sent by the leaders of Rivers State to personally convey their condolences.

Mpigi’s death has continued to draw tributes from political leaders across party lines, reflecting his influence in Rivers politics and his years of legislative service at the National Assembly.
