Former media aide Laolu Akande has urged the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to select experienced southern politicians like Peter Obi and Rotimi Amaechi as presidential candidates capable of mounting a serious challenge against President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 elections.
Speaking on Channels Television's Sunrise Daily, Akande emphasized the importance of fielding battle-tested figures with strong governance records to create a credible opposition platform.
“If they were serious, people like Rotimi Amaechi, people like Peter Obi ought to be the ones to be pushed forward,” he stated.He highlighted Amaechi’s extensive political resume:
“Look at Amaechi. Amaechi has been a speaker, he’s been a governor, he’s been a minister. He was second in the APC. Tremendous career in politics, opportunities in service. And he was the guy that was in charge of infrastructure development.”
Akande described both Amaechi and Obi as southern candidates with the credentials to effectively confront Tinubu.
He cautioned that failing to present such high-profile options could leave the opposition space dominated by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.
The call comes as the ADC positions itself amid ongoing political realignments and defections, with various opposition groups seeking to unite ahead of 2027.
