12 Soldiers Killed, 7 Missing in Terrorist Ambush on Nigerien Military Convoy

At least 12 Nigerien soldiers and one civilian truck driver were killed, with seven soldiers reported missing, after suspected fighters from the Islamic State in the Greater Sahara (ISGS) ambushed a military convoy in the Tahoua Region of Niger.

The attack took place on March 11, 2026, along the road between Yaya and Tahoua near Bagga village.

The convoy, consisting of about 50 personnel from the 42nd Infantry Battalion (BIA) and the Rapid Security Brigade (BSR) of Tahoua, was traveling in seven vehicles as reinforcement following the sabotage of a pipeline in the area by suspected ISGS elements.

According to security sources cited by expert Zagazola Makama, 12 members of the Defence and Security Forces (FDS) were killed in the complex and coordinated assault.

A civilian driver accompanying the convoy also lost his life. Several soldiers were injured, including the mission leader a lieutenant who was shot twice in the arm and seriously wounded.

One additional soldier reportedly died after being evacuated to a hospital in Tahoua, bringing the confirmed military death toll to at least 13 in some accounts.

Seven soldiers remain unaccounted for following the ambush. The incident highlights the persistent threat posed by ISGS in the Sahel region, particularly in areas near borders with Mali and Burkina Faso, where jihadist groups continue to target military patrols and infrastructure despite ongoing counter-terrorism efforts.

No immediate claim of responsibility was reported beyond the attribution to ISGS fighters.
