The Abia State Government has directed owners of all commercial vehicles operating in the state to install and display waste bins, with full enforcement of the policy set to begin on Tuesday, April 1, 2026.
The measure is aimed at promoting proper waste disposal among commuters and strengthening the state’s sanitation framework.
Abia State Commissioner for Information, Okey Kanu, disclosed this while briefing newsmen on Monday at Government House, Umuahia, after the weekly State Executive Council meeting presided over by Governor Alex Otti.
Kanu explained that the directive is part of ongoing efforts by the government to sustain high hygiene standards across the state through the Abia State Environmental Protection Agency (ASEPA).
He noted that Abia, which was once regarded as one of the dirtiest states in the country, has now transformed into one of the cleanest.
The Commissioner also revealed that several hotels, water factories, and other establishments previously sealed for environmental offences have been reopened after complying with stipulated standards.
Additionally, the state government has successfully reclaimed gully erosion sites and flood-prone areas in Amaiyi Amaogudu, Iyalu-Iberenta, and Elugwu-Nkata.
The new waste bin policy in commercial vehicles is expected to further enhance cleanliness and environmental responsibility in Abia State.
