The United States Geological Survey (USGS) says a magnitude 4.4 earthquake has struck the Gerash region in southern Iran.
The agency noted that the tremor occurred at a depth of
around 10 kilometres (6.21 miles).
Gerash lies in an area that frequently experiences
earthquakes due to its position along the Zagros fold and thrust belt, where
the Arabian and Eurasian tectonic plates collide, one of the most seismically
active zones in the Middle East.
Though earthquakes in the magnitude-4 range are relatively
common in the region, the timing of the quake comes as the Islamic Republic
fends off strikes from Israel and the United States in an operation which began
Saturday.
Shaking from the quake which happened on Tuesday was
reported in surrounding rural areas, but no casualties or major structural
damage so far.
Meanwhile, Israel said it is conducting “simultaneous
strikes in Tehran and Beirut,” targeting Iranian military sites and the
Iran-backed group Hezbollah, as its troops intensify their push in Lebanon.
Earlier, the Israeli military said it had struck Iranian
missile launchers and air defenses used to “target Israeli Air Force aircraft”.
Israeli jets “will continue to strike against attempts to
arm missile launchers” as well as “live fire array sites, missile launchers,
and ballistic missiles,” the military said.
Hours before, the US Central Command said American forces
“destroyed Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps command and control facilities,
Iranian air defense capabilities, missile and drone launch sites, and military
airfields”.
Iran has continued to strike at US allies in the Gulf with
aerial attacks overnight.
On Tuesday morning, Iranian drones hit the US embassy in
Riyadh causing a minor fire and prompting the diplomatic mission to tell
Americans to distance themselves from the compound.
The attack followed an earlier Iranian drone strike on the
US embassy in Kuwait.
