Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has compared politicians who left the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, accusing them of lacking leadership qualities.
Wike made the remark on Sunday while addressing his faction of the PDP during its national convention in Abuja.
He argued that, like Obi, these defectors abandoned the party instead of staying to resolve its internal crises.
“The former candidate of the Labour Party wanted to be president. The Labour Party gave him the platform, but when a crisis came in the Labour Party, and he was supposed to show leadership, he ran away because he could not solve problems,” Wike said.
He added: “I liken those who defected from the PDP to the former presidential candidate of the Labour Party; they lack leadership traits.”
The convention proceeded despite an ongoing legal dispute at the Supreme Court concerning the legitimacy of rival PDP factions.
Wike has repeatedly stated that the PDP will not field a presidential candidate in the 2027 general elections. Instead, he pledged support for President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid.
The comments come amid continued turmoil and defections within the PDP as various political actors position themselves ahead of the 2027 polls.
