Fresh talks between former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi and ex-Kano State Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso have sparked renewed speculation of a grand opposition alliance aimed at challenging President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election.
The development gained momentum following Obi’s recent visit to Kwankwaso in Kano, where crowds chanted “Obi-Kwankwaso” and the two leaders were seen engaging closely with supporters.
Reports indicate that former President Olusegun Obasanjo is playing a key role in midwifing the potential alliance.
According to sources, Obi and Kwankwaso have already set up a committee to actualise a joint presidential ticket under the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Many political observers believe that combining Obi’s strong “Obidient” movement in the South with Kwankwaso’s formidable “Kwankwasiya” grassroots network in the North could create a formidable force capable of unsettling Tinubu’s re-election bid.
Analysts recall that in the 2023 election, the lack of unity among major opposition figures was widely believed to have worked in favour of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
A successful Obi-Kwankwaso ticket is now being viewed by some as a game-changer that could significantly alter the 2027 political landscape.
As consultations continue among opposition stakeholders, including recent meetings involving other figures like Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde and former Bayelsa Governor Seriake Dickson, the emerging alliance is already sending ripples across Nigeria’s political space.
Neither Obi nor Kwankwaso has made any official statement confirming a formal pact, but the renewed engagements have clearly rekindled discussions of a united front against the ruling party in 2027.
