The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has raised the alarm, accusing elements within the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of orchestrating a scheme to position President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as the unchallenged frontrunner or effectively the sole viable candidate in the 2027 presidential election.
In a strongly worded statement released in Abuja and signed by National Publicity Secretary Bolaji Abdullahi, the ADC claimed the APC is working to undermine opposition parties, specifically targeting the ADC by attempting to impose an expelled member as its national chairman.
The party alleged that this is part of a deliberate strategy to sow internal chaos and eliminate credible alternatives to Tinubu's re-election bid.
The ADC pointed to efforts allegedly underway to pressure the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) into recognizing Nafiu Bala Gombe described as an expelled former deputy national chairman under ex-leader Ralph Nwosu as the legitimate national chairman of the ADC.
According to the statement, Gombe's expulsion stemmed from actions deemed inconsistent with the party's constitution and leadership directives.
The opposition party asserted that this maneuver is backed by influential APC figures, including a named governor and a senior security official in Abuja, as part of a broader plan to destabilize viable opposition structures ahead of 2027.
The ADC emphasized that its leadership remains firmly under the control of former Senate President David Mark, in collaboration with former Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola as part of a coalition.
This followed a joint meeting of the party's National Working Committee (NWC) and National Executive Committee (NEC) in July 2025, which was monitored by INEC officials.
The commission formally recognized this leadership change in September 2025.Adding weight to its position, the ADC referenced a Federal High Court ruling on March 6, 2026, which dismissed a legal challenge to Mark's leadership and affirmed that internal party affairs are not subject to external interference.
The party vowed to use all lawful avenues to counter what it labeled as "anti-democratic forces" seeking to manipulate opposition platforms and erode competitive democracy in Nigeria.
"Such actions threaten democratic pluralism and the constitutional rights of Nigerians to form and back genuine political alternatives," the statement warned, urging vigilance against any ruling-party attempts to infiltrate or control rival groups for electoral advantage.
The ADC's accusations come amid ongoing political realignments and tensions as Nigeria approaches the 2027 general elections.
