The President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), Dr. Patrice Motsepe, has confirmed that Morocco will host the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) 2026 as originally planned.
Despite recent speculation suggesting a possible postponement or a change in host nation, the 16th edition of the tournament is set to take place from March 17 to April 3, 2026.
Speaking after a CAF Executive Committee meeting in Dar es Salaam, Motsepe addressed the rumors directly, stating, “There is discussion taking place, and a lot of competitons. Morocco came to assist. They were many countries that wanted to host it, but because we didn’t have time and our standards were very high. The WAFCON continues, as we speak now, we still have an engagement with Morocco.”
While there were reports of potential date adjustments to the schedule, the CAF President clarified that the timeline is fixed to remain in alignment with FIFA.
He explained that the tournament serves as a vital qualifier for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup, noting, “We can’t change the date because it is part of the qualification pathway for the Women’s World Cup. WAFCON will continue and it will be successful”.
This decision marks the third consecutive time Morocco will host the competition, following the 2022 and 2024 editions.
Although South African officials had expressed a willingness to step in as a replacement host if necessary, CAF has remained committed to the Moroccan venue.
The 2026 tournament will feature an expanded 16-team format and will play a decisive role in determining which African teams advance to the global stage in 2027.
