The US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has proposed a plan to obstruct asylum seekers from obtaining work authorisations.
In a statement on Friday, the DHS said work permits issuance
for asylum applicants would pause until average processing times for certain
asylum applications reach 180 days or lower.
Based on current wait times, DHS estimated it could take
between 14 to 173 years to reach the level to resume issuing work permits, but
stressed that other factors could shorten the timeline.
“For too long, a fraudulent asylum claim has been an easy
path to working in the United States, overwhelming our immigration system with
meritless applications,” a DHS spokesperson said, adding that applications have
reached a “historic high”.
The statement added that there are currently more than 1.4
million pending affirmative asylum claims.
“This rule, if finalized, would reduce the incentive to file
frivolous, fraudulent, or otherwise meritless asylum claims by changing filing
and eligibility requirements for aliens requesting employment authorization
based on a pending asylum application,” the DHS said.
The Donald Trump-led administration also proposed creating
more restrictive eligibility criteria for asylum-based work permits, arguing
that a work permit “is not an entitlement” and is issued at the discretion of
the DHS secretary.
