UAE Closes Airspace, Qatar Airways Suspends Flights Amid Iran Missile Attacks on US Bases

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has temporarily shut its airspace, and Qatar Airways has halted all flights, following Iran's missile strikes on US military bases across the Middle East in retaliation for US-Israel operations against Iranian targets.

Explosions were reported in Abu Dhabi, Manama, Doha, Kuwait City, and Riyadh as regional tensions escalated rapidly on February 28, 2026.

In Bahrain, officials confirmed a missile hit the US Navy’s Fifth Fleet headquarters in Juffair, with smoke seen rising from the base area.

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps claimed the attacks targeted key US installations, including Al Dhafra in the UAE, Al Udeid in Qatar, Ali Al Salem in Kuwait, and the Fifth Fleet in Bahrain.

While some missiles were intercepted, others caused visible impacts and triggered widespread air defense activations.

The UAE cited the deteriorating security environment for its airspace closure, with similar restrictions imposed in Kuwait and Bahrain.

Qatar’s aviation authority confirmed the shutdown, directly forcing Qatar Airways, one of the region’s major carriers to suspend operations, with some flights diverted or returned.

The strikes follow US President Donald Trump’s announcement of coordinated actions with Israel against Iranian missile and nuclear-related sites, heightening fears of a wider conflict.

No casualty details from the US bases have been released, and the situation remains fluid with ongoing alerts in Gulf states.

Global airlines are closely monitoring developments and adjusting routes accordingly.
