President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz have committed to deepening bilateral relations between Nigeria and Germany, with a focus on enhanced cooperation in security, power generation and transmission, railway infrastructure, creative arts, and skill development.
The agreement was reached during a telephone conversation on Wednesday afternoon, February 18, 2026, lasting approximately nine minutes from 2:01 pm to around 2:10 pm.
According to a statement issued by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, the leaders discussed the Presidential Power Initiative, with President Tinubu highlighting Nigeria’s need for support in improving power transmission infrastructure.
Chancellor Merz responded positively, assuring that Siemens stands ready to provide technical assistance, while Deutsche Bank is prepared to offer financing for the project.
The two leaders expressed serious concern over the deteriorating security situation in the Sahel region. President Tinubu specifically requested Germany’s assistance in supplying used helicopters to bolster intelligence gathering and reconnaissance efforts.
“The Sahel corridor is bad and needs our support. Intelligence support reconnaissance is needed,” he stated.
Beyond security and energy, the conversation touched on opportunities in creative arts and vocational training.
Chancellor Merz emphasized the cultural significance of African arts and advocated for the establishment of a Great Museum of African Arts, while also expressing eagerness for the arrival of Nigeria’s newly appointed ambassador to Germany.
Diplomatic ties between Nigeria and Germany, which span 65 years, continue to provide a strong foundation for these collaborative efforts.
The call shows both countries’ intent to translate shared priorities into concrete projects, particularly in critical areas of infrastructure, regional stability, and cultural exchange.
No specific timelines or formal agreements were announced following the discussion, but further engagements are anticipated as preparations advance.
The statement marks the first high-level interaction between President Tinubu and Chancellor Merz since the latter assumed office, signaling a proactive approach to strengthening Nigeria-Germany relations amid global and regional challenges.
