John Odigie-Oyegun, a former governor of Edo State and a
chieftain of the African Democratic Congress, ADC, has warned that individuals
allegedly involved in an attempted assassination on him, former presidential
candidate, Peter Obi, and other party stakeholders are “playing with fire”.
Oyegun warned that such actions could trigger outcomes far
more damaging than anticipated.
The reported attack took place in Benin City, Edo State,
during an event marking the official defection of Olumide Akpata to the ADC.
Gunmen allegedly invaded Oyegun’s residence, firing shots
and targeting party loyalists as well as members of the Obidient Movement.
Speaking with reporters afterwards, Oyegun disclosed that
security operatives had alerted them mid-event about a possible assault,
leading organizers to abruptly conclude the gathering.
He faulted what he described as poor collaboration among
security agencies and raised concerns about the state government’s
effectiveness in safeguarding lives and property, stressing that ensuring
citizens’ safety is the foremost obligation of any administration.
Oyegun said, “I fear that our leaders, both nationally and
within this state, are acting recklessly. The repercussions could be
devastating—far beyond what many imagine.
“During the programme, we received credible intelligence
from a security source indicating that the venue might come under attack, and
we were advised to wrap up immediately.
“We could not disregard such information. We quickly ended
the event, and it seems we narrowly avoided disaster. Shortly after we left,
chaos erupted. About ten vehicles drove in, and gunfire rang out across the
area. Some people sustained injuries.
“There was no effective synergy among the security agencies
to provide urgent protection for the venue. Assailants arrived in multiple
vehicles, forced their way in while shooting, and left without resistance. In a
state with a sitting governor, isn’t the primary duty of government the
protection of its people?”
