A chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Rivers State, Sunday Ohakwu, has raised the alarm over an alleged plot by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to arrest former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi.
Ohakwu made the claim during a press briefing in Abuja on Wednesday, attributing the purported scheme to the APC's unease over Amaechi's rising popularity and his role as a leading presidential aspirant for the ADC ahead of the 2027 elections.
“We have discovered that the plot is to arrest the top opposition political figure,” Ohakwu stated. “We strongly have it in our discovery that the plot is being coordinated by a top security official in the APC government, in the presidency, and could happen anytime soon, barring any last-minute change of plans.”
He further alleged that recent meetings had led to the formation of a small committee tasked with identifying “waterproof grounds and reasons” for anti-graft agencies such as the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC), Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), or Department of State Services (DSS)—to arrest, detain, and prosecute Amaechi.
“As part of their aggressive efforts to find reasons and evidence to nail him for prosecution in the courts, various teams are currently looking at state records, accounts and properties in Rivers State, Lagos State and Abuja, looking for a full-proof, watertight case that will lead to the arrest and trial of Amaechi,” Ohakwu added.
The ADC leader described the alleged moves as a desperate attempt to undermine the opposition party and Amaechi's presidential ambitions. He dismissed any such efforts as doomed to fail.
“Whatever plots they are planning against our leader is already dead on arrival. Nigeria will not accept any witch-hunt or acts to distract or intimidate our party or our leader,” he warned.
Amaechi, a former Rivers State governor and key figure in Nigerian politics, recently aligned with the ADC after leaving the APC. No immediate response has been reported from the APC, the presidency, or the mentioned security agencies regarding the allegations.
The claims come amid heightened political tensions as parties position themselves for the 2027 general elections.
