Former Edo State Governor John Odigie-Oyegun has announced that leaders of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in the South-South region have unanimously endorsed former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi's bid for the presidency in the 2027 general elections.
Oyegun, a prominent chieftain of the ADC and former national chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), made the disclosure on Friday during a consultative meeting of ADC South-South leaders held in Benin City, the Edo State capital.According to Oyegun, Amaechi described as "our son" took the opportunity during the gathering to formally inform regional stakeholders of his intention to contest the presidency under the ADC platform.
The endorsement came swiftly and without dissent.“We are glad that our son, Rotimi Amaechi, took advantage of this meeting to brief us formally of his intention to run for the presidency of our great nation,” Oyegun stated.
“I can report that a unanimous decision was taken to give him all the support that he needs in pursuit of his ambition.”
The development positions Amaechi, a former Rivers State governor and key figure in Nigerian politics, as a strong contender for the ADC's presidential ticket.
It comes amid speculation about potential candidates for the opposition party, including figures like Peter Obi, who has been associated with broader opposition coalitions.
Amaechi has previously advocated for a southern presidential candidate in the ADC, arguing in February 2026 that the party should prioritize a southerner to complete an eight-year southern presidency term before power shifts back to the north.
He has also expressed readiness to serve only one term if elected and has urged the party to select the candidate best positioned to convince Nigerians of meaningful change.
The South-South endorsement signals growing regional backing for Amaechi within the ADC and could intensify competition for the party's nomination ahead of the 2027 polls.
