Barely 24 hours after Adamawa State Governor Ahmadu Fintiri defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), 22 of his commissioners and special advisers have followed suit, formally joining the ruling party.
The mass defection was announced on Saturday, February 28, 2026, as the officials publicly declared their alignment with the APC during a ceremony at the Government House in Yola.
The group includes key cabinet members who served under Fintiri in his first and second terms.
Governor Fintiri had made the initial move on Friday in a statewide broadcast, explaining that his decision to join the APC was driven by the need to secure greater federal support, unlock more development projects, and accelerate progress for the people of Adamawa.
He stated that his entire cabinet and a significant portion of the PDP structure in the state were moving with him.“I am joining the APC with my entire cabinet and a large section of the PDP in Adamawa,” Fintiri said during the broadcast.
“This is not about personal ambition but about delivering dividends of democracy to our people through stronger collaboration with the federal government.”
The defections further consolidate the APC's dominance in the North-East geopolitical zone and across Nigeria, pushing the party's control to 30 out of 36 states.
The PDP, once a major opposition force, continues to lose ground as high-profile figures realign ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Political analysts view the swift cabinet defection as a sign of loyalty to the governor and strategic positioning for future appointments and political relevance under the new platform.
The move has also sparked reactions from opposition figures, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, who described such defections as motivated by “personal survival” rather than genuine ideological shift or public interest.
With Adamawa now firmly under APC control, attention turns to how the party will manage internal dynamics and deliver on promises of accelerated development in the state.
