Shettima has been a very good partner in our journey for progress - Tinubu

President Bola Tinubu has described Vice-President Kashim Shettima as a “very good partner on the journey for progress”.

Tinubu spoke on Monday during the second edition of the two-day National Economic Council (NEC) conference in Abuja.

Shettima, ministers, and some state governors were among the attendees.

The conference was convened by the federal government to “strengthen Nigeria’s economic coordination and accelerate inclusive growth across all states of the federation”.

In his speech, Tinubu said his administration is ready to strengthen the country’s security forces and restore peace across communities battling violent attacks.

The president said insecurity hinders the economy, adding that everyone must come together to find an immediate solution to the country’s security challenges.

“Distinguished vice-president, chairman of the National Economic Council, Kashim Shettima… a very good partner on the journey for progress,” he said.

“I promise you here that I’ll play my part. Seven zones of mechanisation are coming. I promise Nigerians that this will be delivered, and I am here again to further find ways to strengthen our security forces and defeat terrorism.

“That, I promise you, is what has kept all of us sleepless at night, but I assure you we will win with determination and resilience. We will overcome this unacceptable terrorism and banditry. It’s not part of our culture. It’s foreign to us.”

The president said his administration has ensured that state and local governments receive increased financial allocations to enable them develop capacities to pay salaries and invest in infrastructure.

Tinubu’s commendation of Shettima comes amid speculation that the vice-president may not return as the president’s running mate ahead of the 2027 general election.

In June 2025, the APC stakeholders’ summit in Gombe descended into chaos after some speakers endorsed Tinubu for a second term without mentioning Shettima.

Reacting, Bayo Onanuga, special adviser to the president on information and strategy, dismissed the incident as a “non-issue”.
