Rotimi Amaechi Joins Protest at National Assembly Over Electoral Reforms

Rotimi Amaechi, former Governor of Rivers State and ex-Minister of Transportation, made a notable appearance today as he joined the ongoing #OccupyNASS demonstration at the National Assembly complex in Abuja.

The protest, now in its second day, has been organized by civil society groups, opposition figures, and concerned citizens calling for urgent amendments to Nigeria's electoral laws. Demonstrators are demanding the reinstatement of mandatory real-time electronic transmission of election results directly from polling units to the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) Result Viewing Portal (IREV), a measure they argue is essential to prevent rigging and ensure transparency in future elections, particularly ahead of the 2027 general polls.

Amaechi's participation added significant momentum to the movement, drawing attention from media and online platforms where videos of him at the scene quickly circulated. Protesters have emphasized the need for broader participation, with calls for more Nigerians to join in pushing for these reforms.

The demonstration shows growing frustration among opposition stakeholders and activists over perceived attempts to weaken electoral safeguards, with some coalitions publicly backing the action as a stand against potential manipulation in upcoming votes.
