Senate Holds Emergency Session Over Electoral Act Row on E-Transmission

Senators are gathering in the chamber today, February 10, 2026, for an emergency plenary session amid growing controversy over proposed changes to Nigeria’s Electoral Act, particularly the rules governing electronic transmission of election results.

The sitting follows intense public backlash and protests after the Senate recently passed the Electoral Act (Amendment) Bill 2026 without making real-time electronic transmission of results from polling units to INEC’s Result Viewing Portal (IReV) mandatory.

Lawmakers retained the existing 2022 provision, which allows INEC to transmit results electronically only at its discretion and after they have been announced at polling units.

Critics say this weakens transparency and increases risks of manipulation ahead of the 2027 elections.

Protests have erupted outside the National Assembly, with civil society groups, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), and other stakeholders demanding mandatory real-time transmission to safeguard electoral integrity.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio called the unscheduled session, originally adjourned until February 24, following the widespread outcry.

Although the official notice did not list an agenda, the timing points to discussions on reconciling the Senate’s version of the bill with the House of Representatives, which reportedly supported stronger real-time transmission requirements.

Today’s session is expected to centre on the disputed Clause 60(3), with pressure mounting for reconsideration to restore public trust in the electoral process.

The outcome could have major implications for Nigeria’s preparations for future elections.
