The Deputy Spokesperson of the House of Representatives, Hon. Philip Agbese, has strongly refuted allegations made by Senator Ali Ndume that certain sections of Nigeria’s tax laws were falsified or improperly amended during the legislative process.
In a statement issued on Sunday, February 1, 2026, Agbese described Ndume’s claims as “unfounded, misleading, and mischievous,” insisting that the tax reform bills currently under consideration passed through all required stages of public hearing, committee scrutiny, and plenary debate in full compliance with constitutional provisions and House rules.
He emphasized that no falsification or backdoor insertions occurred, and accused the senator of attempting to undermine the integrity of the National Assembly and the ongoing fiscal reform efforts aimed at improving revenue generation and economic stability.
Agbese challenged Ndume to provide concrete evidence to substantiate his accusations rather than relying on what he called “baseless innuendo,” while reaffirming the House’s commitment to transparency and due process in lawmaking.
The rebuttal comes amid heightened public debate over the proposed tax bills, which seek to harmonize Nigeria’s fragmented tax regime but have faced criticism from some quarters over potential burdens on citizens and businesses.
