Presidency Slams Opposition Over Electoral Act 'Outrage', Urges ADC, NNPP to Introspect

The Presidency has strongly criticized opposition parties for their reaction to the Electoral Act (Amendment) 2026, calling it “unwarranted outrage” and “constant lamentation,” while advising leaders of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) to focus on fixing their own internal problems rather than spreading alleged misinformation.

In a statement released Thursday by Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the Presidency rejected claims that the amendments undermine transparency, enable rigging, or aim to create a one-party state under President Bola Tinubu.

The opposition coalition had condemned provisions including the use of Form EC8A as a backup for result transmission during network failures, the handling of electronic transmission, and the retention of direct primaries and consensus options, arguing these threaten credible elections in 2027.

The Presidency described these criticisms as “reckless and spurious,” insisting the law passed after two years of National Assembly debate and stakeholder input closes previous loopholes for manipulation while improving on the old Act.

It clarified that real-time transmission is still allowed where possible, with Form EC8A as a contingency, and stressed that the IReV portal serves public viewing, not official collation.

Onanuga accused the opposition, especially the ADC, of relying on “irresponsible political statements” for attention.

He defended direct primaries and consensus as steps toward greater party democracy.

The Presidency called on ADC and NNPP leaders to stop attacking the Act and the APC government and instead “introspect” and address their own organizational weaknesses.

The sharp exchange reflects rising political friction as Nigeria approaches the 2027 elections, with opposition groups continuing to demand stronger transparency measures in the electoral law.
