Some police officers have been arrested over an “accidental shooting” that left two passersby dead in the Alagbado area of Lagos state on Friday.
Abimbola Adebisi, the Lagos police spokesperson, said
Moshood Jimoh, the police commissioner, has ordered an investigation into the
incident.
The detained policemen were reportedly chasing suspected
internet fraudsters, popularly known as “Yahoo boys,” around the area when they
fired the gunshots.
Confirming the incident in a post on X, Adebisi said Jimoh
has ordered “adequate deployment of personnel to forestall any breakdown of law
and order” in the area.
“The officers involved in the unfortunate shooting incident
that occurred today in Alagbado have been arrested and taken into custody,” the
police spokesperson said.
Adebisi added that normalcy has been restored to the area,
assuring that justice will be served and the outcome of the investigation will
be made public.
An X user who witnessed the incident said the police
officers are attached to the AIT division police station.
He said the officers, who were on stop-and-search duty, “ran
away immediately” after shooting the passersby, “leaving the unconscious
victims without aid until they gave up the ghost as they couldn’t get help”.
The incident follows a series of cult clashes recorded in
parts of the state, particularly in Iyana-Ipaja, Aboru, Badore, Olokonla,
Onipanu, and Satellite Town, where at least four people have been reportedly
killed, and several others injured.
