Peter Obi to Nigerians: Remember politicians in your prayers — we’re Nigeria’s problem

Peter Obi, the Labour Party's presidential candidate in the 2023 general election and former governor of Anambra State, has called on Nigerians to include politicians in their prayers, bluntly describing them as the root cause of the country's woes.

Delivering his remarks during a thanksgiving service on Sunday to commemorate Oyo State's 50th anniversary at the Cathedral of St. Peter Anglican Church in Aremo, Ibadan, Obi emphasized that Nigeria's challenges stem not from a lack of resources but from poor governance and leadership failures.

"I want to make a request from Nigerians. Do remember us politicians in your prayers. We are the problem of Nigeria, no other person," he stated.

He reiterated a familiar theme from his political messaging: "Nigeria is not a poor country, it is poorly governed. Remember us in your prayers that God should touch our hearts to use public money for public good. That is what is required."

The event, part of celebrations marking the creation of Oyo State on February 3, 1976, drew political figures, religious leaders, and residents.

Obi used the occasion to commend Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde for his consistent focus on good governance.

In a subsequent post on X (formerly Twitter), Obi expressed gratitude to Governor Makinde for inviting him to speak and recalled an earlier engagement at the start of Makinde's administration, where they discussed leadership and governance during an executive council retreat.

"I am pleased to note that the governor has remained consistent in his approach. Beyond the visible infrastructure across the state, his performance is widely discussed and appreciated by Oyo people wherever they are," Obi wrote.

He also praised Makinde's emphasis on building strong institutions over reliance on individuals, describing it as a "statesmanlike vision" that ensures sustained progress beyond any single administration.

Additionally, Obi thanked Bishop Williams Aladekugbe of Ibadan North for a sermon that framed thanksgiving as a moral discipline promoting humility, responsibility, and service to the common good.

He encouraged Oyo residents to continue supporting the governor and prayed for divine guidance for leaders at all levels to prioritize the welfare of the people.

Obi's comments come amid ongoing national debates on governance, accountability, and leadership in Nigeria, reinforcing his longstanding critique of how public resources are managed.

The 50th anniversary festivities for Oyo State have included various events such as symposiums, carnivals, and religious services, highlighting both achievements and aspirations for the state's future.
