No Cause for Alarm Over INEC Invitation - Turaki-led PDP

The Kabiru Tanimu Turaki-led faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has reassured its members and supporters that there is no reason to worry about the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC)'s invitation to a consultative meeting with political parties.

In a statement issued on February 5, 2026, and signed by National Publicity Secretary Ini Ememobong, the faction described the invitation as controversial but insisted it poses no threat to the party's leadership or ongoing processes.

The statement explained that INEC invited leaders of political parties and also extended the invite to some former PDP members claiming to head a so-called National Caretaker Committee, an entity the faction says has no basis in the PDP Constitution.

“We can assure that INEC will not choose a leadership for our party,” the statement emphasized.

It criticized INEC for not exercising restraint amid the leadership disputes still pending before the Court of Appeal, warning that the action could create unnecessary tension.

The Turaki-led PDP vowed to pursue all necessary legal responses and urged members nationwide to stay calm and hopeful, expressing confidence that the Court of Appeal would soon resolve the ongoing cases regarding the party's leadership.

The faction reaffirmed its commitment to the “rebirth” movement under Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, SAN, stating that the party remains strong, steady, and secure despite challenges. It assured that the movement would overcome current obstacles to emerge as a stronger, more united opposition force ahead of future elections.

This comes amid deepening factional divisions in the PDP, including competing claims to national leadership and recent court rulings, with the Turaki group (aligned with figures like Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde) and a rival faction (backed by FCT Minister Nyesom Wike) both asserting legitimacy.

The INEC meeting was part of preparations for upcoming electoral activities, including the 2027 general elections.
