Panic on Zamfara Highway as Bomb Rumors leaves Hundreds of Motorists Stranded

Hundreds of commuters were left stranded for hours on Friday along the busy Gusau-Tsafe-Funtua road in Zamfara State after rumors circulated that bandits had planted multiple Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) on the highway.

The scare began early in the morning, with reports alleging that the explosives had been laid overnight at the same spot where a similar IED detonated just days earlier on Wednesday, severely damaging a trailer truck but causing no casualties.

Fearing possible blasts, many motorists abandoned their vehicles along the roadside or turned back to their starting points, while others sought safety in hiding.

Tension gripped the area as panic spread among travelers, halting traffic and disrupting journeys for hours.

A local resident, Adamu Mohammed, described the scene: “Motorists were left stranded for hours for fear of possible explosions, while many abandoned their journeys and went on hiding.”

The Zamfara State Police Command responded swiftly, directing commuters to avoid the road until security teams could verify its safety.

Officers, equipped with IED detection tools, conducted a thorough inspection of the highway.Police spokesperson DSP Yazid Abubakar confirmed that no explosives were found during the sweep.

“We did not come across any IED, as such, we asked the commuters to go about their journeys,” he stated.

Normal traffic has since resumed on the route, though lingering fears of further attacks persist among residents, heightened by the recent Wednesday incident involving bandits' use of roadside bombs.
