Outcome of FCT, Rivers Elections Reflects Growing Support for Tinubu – Wike

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has described the recent electoral victories by the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the FCT Area Council elections and the Rivers State bye-election as clear evidence of increasing public confidence in President Bola Tinubu's policies and leadership.

In a statement issued on Sunday, February 22, 2026, Wike highlighted the APC's strong performance across the polls, interpreting the results as a sign of shifting political dynamics and broadening support for Tinubu's Renewed Hope agenda.

Key highlights from Wike's comments:The APC recorded significant victories in the FCT Area Council elections, including securing councillorship seats in remote and hinterland areas for the first time, as well as an overwhelming majority in local council chairmanship positions.

He emphasized that these grassroots successes particularly in previously unreachable communities demonstrate that government initiatives are now positively impacting lives at the local level.

In the Rivers State bye-election, Wike described the APC's achievement as a triumph for a “rainbow coalition” of political stakeholders, reflecting cross-party collaboration and alignment behind President Tinubu.

“The results underscored shifting political dynamics and growing cross-party collaboration ahead of future electoral contests,” Wike stated.

Wike tied the outcomes directly to growing endorsement of Tinubu's governance approach, suggesting the victories signal broader public trust in the administration's direction and reforms.

The comments come shortly after the Saturday, February 21, 2026, polls, where the APC dominated in the FCT (winning five out of six area council chairmanships, with the PDP taking one) and achieved notable gains in Rivers, amid other concurrent by-elections in places like Kano.

President Tinubu has separately congratulated the winners of the FCT, Rivers, and Kano elections, praising the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for conducting credible polls and commending Wike's leadership in the FCT.

Wike's remarks align with similar positive assessments from APC chapters (such as in Lagos) and other supporters, who view the results as a referendum affirming Tinubu's policies ahead of future contests, including the 2027 general elections.

Critics, including opposition figures like former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, have raised concerns about aspects of the FCT polls, such as low voter turnout, but Wike's interpretation frames the APC's successes as a mandate of growing national support for the president.
