The Osun State Police Command has launched a full investigation into the alleged shooting and reckless pursuit of a student and his family in Osogbo, the state capital.
In a statement released by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abiodun Ojelabi, the command confirmed that the probe was triggered by a viral video circulating online and a formal press statement issued by the Assistant General Secretary of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Southwest Zone D, in February.
According to the statement, preliminary inquiries are underway, with officers collecting operational records, eyewitness accounts, and other relevant evidence related to the incident, which reportedly occurred around the Itaolokan Junction to Oke Ayepe area of Osogbo.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Gotan, represented by the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations and other senior officers, personally visited the victims at the hospital.
The statement noted that the injured persons are responding to treatment, and the police command has committed to covering their medical expenses.
CP Gotan emphasized that any officers found to have been involved in the incident are currently under investigation.
He stressed that the command will not tolerate any unauthorized or reckless discharge of firearms, and appropriate disciplinary or legal action will follow if the allegations are substantiated.
The Osun State Police Command reiterated its dedication to professionalism and urged members of the public, including those with verifiable information, additional video footage, or eyewitness testimonies, to come forward and assist the ongoing investigation.
The command also appealed to student unions, NANS, and other stakeholders to remain calm, avoid any form of unrest, and allow the investigative process to run its full course.
It assured that justice would be served based strictly on established facts and evidence.
