Multiple Fire Outbreaks Destroy Markets, Homes in Three Yobe LGAs

Fire outbreaks have ravaged communities across three Local Government Areas in Yobe State, destroying market stalls, residential homes, and food reserves, and leaving numerous families displaced and without livelihoods.

The affected areas include:

Bukarti in Yunusari Local Government Area (northern Yobe),

Fuchimiram and Kalgeri in Geidam Local Government Area (eastern Yobe),

Gumsamari in Yusufari Local Government Area (northern Yobe).

According to a preliminary assessment conducted by the Yobe State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), the fires caused extensive damage to both commercial and residential structures.

Many households have lost their homes, personal belongings, and critical food supplies, exacerbating vulnerability in an already fragile region.

The exact cause of the simultaneous outbreaks remains under investigation. However, local residents and some officials have pointed to the recent return of intense, fast-moving Harmattan winds as a likely contributing factor.

The dry, dusty winds, common during this season, can rapidly spread sparks from minor ignition sources such as open flames, faulty electrical connections, or unattended cooking fires.

SEMA officials have begun coordinating relief efforts, including the distribution of emergency shelter materials, food items, and other essentials to affected families.

The agency is also working with local authorities to conduct detailed damage assessments and identify immediate needs. No casualties have been reported so far, but the incidents have heightened concerns about fire safety and preparedness in rural communities during the Harmattan period.

Residents have been advised to exercise caution with open fires, ensure proper storage of flammable materials, and report any potential fire hazards promptly.

Yobe State authorities have assured that investigations into the causes are ongoing, and support will continue for those impacted by the disasters.
