Obasanjo's Daughter: I'll Be The Next Ogun Governor

Prof. Iyabo Obasanjo, daughter of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, has boldly declared her intention to become the next governor of Ogun State in the 2027 elections.

The former senator for Ogun Central (2007–2011) and one-time Commissioner for Health in the state made the announcement during an interview on 103.7FM Eagle7 Sports with Nigerian legend Segun Odegbami.

She confirmed her recent return to active partisan politics after a long hiatus and her defection to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), where she has now registered.

Iyabo ruled out any return to the Senate, stating clearly: “The only thing I’ll come back to do is the governorship. And we have started that journey. We are going to see it through. That’s the journey I’m on, and we are very serious about it. I mean, we are very dedicated to it.”

Her political background includes serving as Ogun State Commissioner for Health from 2003 to 2007 before her senatorial tenure. She is also known for her philanthropic work through the Iyaniwura Foundation, which has impacted communities across the state.

The declaration has already garnered support from traditional rulers. The Eselu of Iselu Kingdom in Yewa North Local Government Area, Oba Akintunde Akinyemi, recently hosted her at his palace and publicly backed her ambition.

He described her as a “woman of substance” with the “pedigree and capacity” to govern, emphasizing her constitutional right to contest and calling for greater inclusion of women in leadership roles.

Oba Akinyemi praised her past service and philanthropic efforts, noting their “unforgettable impact,” and stressed that Ogun State is blessed with exceptional women who should have wider political space.

While her ambition has sparked discussions in political circles, including debates over zoning (with some arguing it's Ogun West's turn), Iyabo's move signals a potentially competitive race in 2027 under the APC platform.
