The Kano State chapter of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has accused the state government of orchestrating a deliberate political witch-hunt against its members through undemocratic actions.
In a statement signed by the party’s Publicity Secretary, Engr. Ibrahim Karaye, the NNPP claimed the government originally formed on the NNPP platform before defecting is now retracting Hajj pilgrimage seats previously allocated to some of its prominent figures, including former commissioners, advisers, and party leaders.
Karaye argued that as bona fide citizens of Kano State, the affected individuals are fully entitled to such privileges and benefits, describing the revocation as unwarranted and vindictive.
The party further alleged that the government is harassing and intimidating former political office holders to surrender official vehicles provided during their service, insisting that such vehicles form part of their consolidated entitlements while in office.
The NNPP urged Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s administration to immediately halt what it termed “acts capable of undermining democratic principles,” stressing that politics should be conducted with decorum, mutual respect, and adherence to constitutional rights, including freedom of association.
The statement warned that political offices are transient and called on authorities to respect citizens’ rights without resorting to intimidation or reprisals.
The accusations come amid ongoing political tensions in Kano following defections and realignments after the 2023 elections, with the NNPP maintaining a vocal opposition presence in the state.
