FAAN: Selfies Allowed at Airports, But No Filming Others Without Consent

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has clarified its rules on filming and photography at airports, stating that personal selfie videos are fully permitted, while recording other passengers without their consent or capturing footage in restricted security and operational areas is strictly prohibited.

The clarification, issued following a recent incident at Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos, addresses growing concerns over privacy and security amid increased passenger filming.

It stems from a case where a traveller using a GoPro was stopped by Aviation Security (AVSEC) officers for recording in a clearly signposted restricted screening zone.

FAAN explained that officers “politely advised the passenger to stop, especially as other travellers have the right not to be recorded without consent and such complaints are frequently raised.”

The individual was not detained but invited to the Crime Investigation & Intelligence Unit for guidance, where he provided a written undertaking and deleted the recordings.

Key points from FAAN's guidelines:

Permitted: Personal selfie videos and non-intrusive self-recording in public terminal areas.

Prohibited: Filming other passengers without explicit consent; recording in security screening zones or other sensitive operational/security areas (marked by clear signage).

“We want to reassure everyone that personal selfie videos are not restricted,” FAAN stated. “Intervention only occurs when filming involves other passengers without consent or captures sensitive operational or security areas.”

The authority urged travellers to respect posted signs, cooperate with security staff, and prioritize privacy and safety.

The response follows a viral social media post by a passenger documenting his journey, highlighting the balance between personal content creation and airport regulations.

This guidance reflects FAAN's efforts to manage the rise in vlogging and smartphone recording while protecting passenger privacy, operational security, and smooth airport functioning.

Travellers are encouraged to adhere to these rules for a secure and comfortable experience.
