Nigerian Leaders Honored Abroad but Face Bullying, Disrespect at Home - Oluremi Tinubu

Nigeria's First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has called on citizens to show more respect and unity toward the country's leaders, highlighting a stark contrast between their international recognition and the criticism they often endure domestically.

In a Facebook post shared on Friday night, Mrs. Tinubu expressed concern over what she described as widespread hostility toward Nigerian leaders at home, despite their high regard overseas.

She attributed much of the negativity to political propaganda, misinformation, and narratives spread by "political paymasters" that foster hatred and harden hearts.

"Most of our leaders are highly respected and honored abroad, yet many Nigerians fail to value what they have because of hatred and the narratives planted in their minds by political paymasters, which have also hardened their hearts," she wrote.

The First Lady specifically condemned the growing trend of online bullying, public shaming, and ridicule directed at leaders.

"They bully these leaders, speak ill of them, demean them, curse them, and even seize upon their mistakes to drag them across social media, ridiculing and mocking them publicly," she stated.

Her comments followed her recent recognition at the United States National Prayer Breakfast in Washington, D.C., where U.S. President Donald Trump described her as a "very respected woman" for her work in faith-based initiatives and women's empowerment.

Mrs. Tinubu, an ordained pastor in the Redeemed Christian Church of God, used the moment to underscore the disconnect between global perceptions and local treatment of Nigerian leaders.

Emphasizing national progress, she urged Nigerians to embrace love, unity, and collective responsibility.

"Nigeria is built on love, unity, and collective effort toward shared success. Let us come together to support our respected leaders and work hand in hand with them to make our country great," she added.
