FG Approves 300% Increase in Nurses' Uniform Allowance

The Federal Government of Nigeria has approved a significant increase in the annual uniform allowance for nurses in federal hospitals, medical centres, and clinics, raising it from N20,000 to N80,000 per year.

This represents a 300% increment aimed at better supporting healthcare workers' professional needs.

The approval was conveyed through a memo from the National Salaries, Wages and Income Commission (NSIWC), signed by Chairman Ekpo Nta.

The new allowance will be implemented via the Integrated Personnel and Payroll Information System (IPPIS) and take effect from January 1, 2026.

This decision comes in response to longstanding concerns raised by the National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives (NANNM).

In July 2025, NANNM described the previous N20,000 annual allowance as "grossly insufficient" and "insulting," highlighting the rising costs of maintaining professional uniforms.

The association had demanded reforms, including an upward review of allowances, a separate salary structure for nurses, increased core duty and shift allowances, mass employment of nurses, and the creation of a Directorate of Nursing Services at the Federal Ministry of Health, to be headed by a registered nurse.

The enhancement follows months of advocacy by NANNM, including a 15-day ultimatum issued in July 2025 warning of potential industrial action if demands were not addressed.
