Nigeria, UK Strengthen Defence Ties to Enhance Intelligence Sharing, Training

Nigeria and the United Kingdom have reaffirmed their commitment to deepening defence cooperation, with a strong focus on improved intelligence sharing, specialised training, and joint efforts to address evolving security threats.

The partnership was highlighted during a meeting at Defence Headquarters in Abuja, where Chief of Defence Staff General Olufemi Oluyede received the United Kingdom High Commissioner to Nigeria, Dr. Richard Montgomery.

General Oluyede praised the UK’s ongoing support to the Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN), particularly in professional military education, specialised training, and capacity building.

He expressed confidence that closer collaboration especially in intelligence sharing and emerging security domains would significantly strengthen Nigeria’s ability to tackle contemporary threats.

“The CDS reaffirmed the AFN’s dedication to continuous professional development and highlighted the value of deeper UK partnership in enhancing operational effectiveness,” the Director of Defence Information, Maj. Gen. Samaila Uba, stated.

Dr. Montgomery acknowledged progress in bilateral defence relations and reiterated the UK’s resolve to further strengthen ties.

He emphasised the shared goal of promoting regional stability, countering terrorism, insurgency, and other complex threats, and developing sustainable military capabilities through sustained cooperation.

The discussions focused on expanding both operational and strategic collaboration between the two nations’ armed forces to better respond to current and future security challenges.

This renewed emphasis builds on the longstanding Nigeria-UK defence relationship, aimed at bolstering Nigeria’s security architecture and contributing to peace and stability across West Africa.
