Human rights activist Omoyele Sowore has accused the Nigeria Police of enforcing laws that do not exist in the country.
Sowore made this allegation on Wednesday during an interview on Channels Television’s ‘The Morning Brief’.
He was speaking on citizen–police relations, stressing that
policing should be about ensuring the protection of citizens in the country.
“First thing is that we should call Nigeria Police
Department and not a Force because some of the activities of the Nigeria Police
and how they have adversarial relationship with citizens is rooted in where
they came from; the colonial era.
“Policing should be about ensuring the protection of
citizens in the country. The Nigeria Police have an interest only in enforcing
laws and even enforcing what is not law.
“Those people at the top of the police hierarchy can
understand that they need to change the DNA of the police by ensuring that
their first attitude is to protect the populace,” he said.
