The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) has pledged a thorough investigation into any credible reports of child sexual abuse or misconduct in Nigerian daycare centers.
The statement follows intense online debate sparked by old tweets from singer Simi (Simisola Bolatito Kosoko) that were recently resurfaced. Critics accused her of inappropriate comments about toddlers during the time she helped at her mother’s daycare while building her music career in 2012–2013.
The controversy gained momentum after Simi strongly condemned rape and sexual violence in response to a now-debunked rape claim on TikTok.
Some users then accused her of applying uneven standards to false accusations versus genuine cases, prompting them to dig up and reinterpret her decade-old posts as sexualizing children.
In her defense, Simi posted on X: “In 2012, I lived and helped out at my mom’s daycare while hustling my music.
"I tweeted everything that happened in my life, Kids can be mischievous. If a child did something I found funny, I tweeted about it. Kids are cute and lovable. I want to hug, kiss and cuddle them. Nothing I tweeted was from perversion.”
She stressed that she was unknown at the time, shared openly without anticipating malicious misinterpretation, and has “never been depraved in my life.”
Despite her explanation, many continued to call for official scrutiny of both Simi and the daycare, suggesting more might come to light.
NAPTIP responded with a brief public appeal: “We kindly request anyone with factual information, evidence, direct knowledge, or who was personally affected to kindly reach out to us confidentially. Via DM or email us info@naptip.gov.ng.”
The agency reiterated its commitment to investigating serious child protection concerns but emphasized the importance of verifiable evidence.
