Nigeria's Minister of State for Defence, Dr. Bello Matawalle, on Thursday, February 5, 2026, hosted His Excellency President Carlos Vila Nova of the Democratic Republic of São Tomé and Príncipe and his wife, Her Excellency Maria de Fátima Vila Nova, at his residence in Abuja.
In a statement, Matawalle expressed his deep gratitude for the visit, describing it as a significant honour for himself and his family.
"I was honoured to host His Excellency President Carlos Vila Nova of the Democratic Republic of São Tomé and Príncipe and his wife, Her Excellency Maria de Fátima Vila Nova, at my Abuja residence on Thursday, 5 February 2026. My family and I are deeply grateful for the honour of hosting Their Excellencies," he said.
The courtesy visit comes amid strengthening ties between Nigeria and São Tomé and Príncipe, two West African nations with shared interests in regional security, particularly in the Gulf of Guinea.
President Vila Nova's trip to Nigeria also included engagements with other high-level officials, reflecting ongoing diplomatic cooperation between the countries.
Matawalle, a former Governor of Zamfara State and a key figure in President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's administration, highlighted the warm reception extended to the visiting leader and his spouse.
