Lagos Orders Total Closure of Lekki–Ajah Expressway for Major Rehabilitation

The Lagos State Government has announced a full closure of the Epe-bound carriageway of the Lekki–Ajah Expressway (also known as Lekki–Epe Expressway) from Admiralty Way Junction to Jubilee Bridge in Ajah to facilitate extensive road rehabilitation works.

The closure, detailed in a statement from the Ministry of Transportation signed by Commissioner Oluwaseun Osiyemi on Thursday, aims to enable uninterrupted construction from intersection to intersection along this busy corridor.

Rehabilitation will proceed in phases, targeting sections including Admiralty Way Junction, Maruwa, Freedom Way, Chisco, Jakande, Igbo-Efon, Chevron, Lekki Conservation Toll Plaza, VGC U-Turn, and ending at Jubilee Bridge in Ajah.

Similar phased repairs are planned for parts of the Lagos-bound carriageway later. This follows the recent successful and early completion of the 9km Chevron-to-Admiralty segment on the Lagos-bound side in just 27 days (ahead of the 41-day projection), part of a broader 28km rehabilitation effort across both directions.

To manage traffic during the works:

Daytime lane-sharing will apply on the remaining carriageway.

From 5:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m.: Two lanes for Lagos-bound traffic, one lane for Epe-bound.

From 3:00 p.m. to 3:00 a.m.: Two lanes for Epe-bound, one lane for Lagos-bound.

All intersections along the route will face complete night-time closures for up to eight hours during asphalt-laying operations.

Motorists are advised to use the Lagos–Calabar Coastal Road where possible as an alternative.

LASTMA officers, traffic personnel, and tow trucks will be deployed along the corridor to assist with flow, breakdowns, and emergencies.

The government urged commuters to plan trips ahead, follow diversion signs, and cooperate with officials, promising regular updates to minimize disruptions.

The overall Lekki–Epe Expressway rehabilitation project, which began in late January 2026, is expected to span about 64 days across a 20km stretch in phases.
