Lagos CAN Names New Secretariat After First Lady Oluremi Tinubu

The Lagos State chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has named its newly commissioned permanent secretariat after First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu, in recognition of her contributions to peace, unity, and national development.

The modern facility, located in Alausa, Ikeja, was officially declared open and christened the “Senator Oluremi Tinubu CAN Lagos State Secretariat” during a colourful ceremony on Tuesday, February 24, 2026.

The event was graced by the National President of CAN, Most Rev. Daniel Okoh, who performed the commissioning. Representing the First Lady was the Secretary to the Lagos State Government, Mrs. Bimbola Salu-Hundeyin, who delivered goodwill messages on her behalf.

This development ends nearly three decades of the Lagos CAN chapter operating without a dedicated headquarters, a challenge previously attributed to land acquisition issues and funding constraints.

The new secretariat provides a permanent administrative base for coordinating Christian activities, interfaith dialogue, and community outreach across the state.

Other sections of the complex were also named in honour of key figures:

The main office block after Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu

The CAN Chairman’s office after Senator Tokunbo Abiru

Speaking at the event, CAN leaders described the naming as a fitting tribute to Senator Tinubu’s long-standing support for religious harmony, youth empowerment, and charitable initiatives through her various platforms, including the Renewed Hope Initiative.

The First Lady, in a message read on her behalf, expressed gratitude for the honour and reaffirmed her commitment to fostering peaceful coexistence among Nigeria’s diverse faith communities.

The gesture has generated widespread reactions on social media and in public discourse, with supporters praising it as a deserved recognition of her role in promoting national unity, while some voices have raised questions about the symbolism amid ongoing security concerns for Christians in parts of the country.

The new secretariat is expected to serve as a hub for CAN’s advocacy, training programmes, and collaborative efforts with government and other faith-based organisations in Lagos State.
