Kidnapped Edo School Children, Others Freed After N15m Ransom Payment

Four remaining victims from a family of nine abducted by gunmen in Edo State have regained their freedom following the payment of N15 million ransom.

The victims, which included five school children, a nursing mother with her two-month-old baby, and others, were kidnapped on Monday, February 2, 2026, around 5pm while returning from school along the Eko-Abeku-Iyowa road in the Evboneka community, near the Benin-Akure expressway.

Gunmen fired sporadically during the abduction as the family traveled in a Lexus 350 jeep driven by the nursing mother.

The kidnappers initially demanded N260 million. According to Mr. Festus Bamidele, the father of some of the abductees, the family paid N15 million ransom plus an additional N250,000 to purchase undisclosed items requested by the abductors.

Five victims were released by the kidnappers on the same day the ransom was paid, while the remaining four comprising school children (the father's children, junior sister, and a sister-in-law) were freed on Monday, February 9, 2026, after eight days in captivity.

One victim, speaking anonymously, recounted the traumatic experience, noting that his sister was hit on the face by a bullet during the abduction.

The release of the remaining victims came alongside others from the Ukhunwmun community, who were kidnapped separately on Wednesday, February 4, 2026, around 4pm, after their own ransom negotiations.
