JAMB: Muslim Candidates May Wear Hijabs for Registration

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has clarified that Muslim female candidates are permitted to keep their hijabs on during the 2026 UTME registration process, following reports of confusion at a centre in Afe Babalola University, Ado-Ekiti.

In an official statement on X, JAMB stressed that no directive has ever banned hijabs. The only requirement is that both ears remain visible during the biometric photo capture a standard global practice for accurate facial recognition and identification, similar to passport and visa applications.

“For clarity, candidates are not required to remove their hijab. The simple requirement is that the ears be visible during photo capture, which can be done without removing the hijab itself,” the board explained.

The issue arose when a candidate was asked to adjust her hijab for the photo; after providing a written undertaking, she was registered successfully.

JAMB reiterated its respect for religious beliefs and urged cooperation to ensure smooth, fair registration for all.

This technical guideline applies solely to biometric standards and is not intended to discriminate.

UTME registration continues, and candidates are encouraged to follow these procedures for efficient processing.
