INEC Stresses Voter Safety as Key to Credible Elections in Upcoming Polls

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has emphasized that credible elections depend on citizens feeling secure enough to participate without fear.

INEC Chairman, Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan, SAN, made this declaration during a high-level meeting with security agencies in Abuja.

He stressed the need to assure voters of their safety ahead of several key elections, including the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Area Council polls scheduled for February 21, 2026, the Ekiti State governorship election on June 20, 2026, the Osun State governorship election on August 8, 2026, and preparations toward the 2027 general elections.

The discussions focused on the importance of early and proactive security planning to avert potential disruptions and ensure peaceful, violence-free electoral processes.

Prof. Amupitan highlighted that with the timetable and schedule of activities for these elections already finalized in line with legal requirements, sustained collaboration with security agencies is essential given the scale and complexity of the upcoming polls.

As public interest and expectations grow for these off-cycle and general elections, the INEC chairman underscored the critical role of early engagement to address challenges and maintain electoral integrity.

The Nigeria Police Force, serving as the lead agency for election security, is working closely with other security outfits to deploy necessary resources and safeguards, ensuring the protection and sanctity of the democratic process at all stages.
