The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has released a revised timetable for the 2027 general elections following the passage of the new Electoral Act, 2026.
Key changes include:
Party primaries and related dispute resolution: April 23 – May 30, 2026
Presidential & National Assembly campaigns: Start August 19, 2026
Governorship & State Assembly campaigns: Start September 9, 2026
All campaigns end 24 hours before polling
Election dates have been brought forward:
Presidential and National Assembly elections: Saturday, January 16, 2027 (previously February 20, 2027)
Governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections: Saturday, February 6, 2027 (previously March 6, 2027)
INEC National Commissioner Mohammed Haruna confirmed the adjustments in a statement, stressing strict compliance by political parties.
The Osun State governorship poll, earlier scheduled for August 8, 2026, is now set for August 15, 2026.
INEC said the new dates fully comply with the 1999 Constitution (as amended) and the Electoral Act, 2026, and called on all stakeholders to support credible, peaceful elections.
