Tensions are rising within the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Taraba State as a powerful coalition of youth groups from Taraba North Senatorial District presses Governor Agbu Kefas to immediately dissolve and reconstitute his cabinet.
In a strongly worded statement released on Monday, the Coalition of APC Youth Groups, led by Ibrahim Bambur, accused the governor of breaching an alleged pre-defection agreement made before his switch from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the APC in January 2026.
The group claims that assurances of greater inclusion for longstanding APC members in strategic government positions formed a key part of the understanding that facilitated Kefas’ high-profile defection, a move that dramatically altered Taraba’s political dynamics.
However, the coalition alleges that these promises have been ignored, with certain unnamed interests inside the administration including some cabinet members actively blocking any cabinet shake-up to safeguard their own positions.
Describing the governor’s reluctance to act as evidence of weak leadership, the youth leaders warned that continued delay risks eroding public trust in the Kefas administration and could damage the party ahead of the 2027 elections.
At the heart of their demands is the appointment of “old APC members” to three critical offices: Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Head of Service (HoS), and Chief of Staff (CoS).
According to Bambur, such appointments would restore fairness, reward loyalty, and promote unity within the party.
“We cannot support a government that marginalises our senatorial district,” Bambur declared. “We urge the governor to urgently address these grievances, or we will make our voices heard decisively at the polls.”
The coalition also highlighted what it called grossly uneven distribution of state projects across Taraba’s three senatorial zones, claiming that approximately 95 per cent of projects are concentrated in Southern Taraba, five per cent in Central Taraba, and zero in Taraba North.
If verified, such disparities could fuel deeper regional divisions and shape electoral outcomes in 2027.In addition, the group levelled serious accusations against the current cabinet, criticising members for alleged inexperience, financial mismanagement, nepotism, and tribal bias.
They further claimed that some officials have misappropriated funds intended for development initiatives though no concrete evidence was presented in the statement.
The escalating discontent signals deepening fractures at the grassroots level of the APC in Taraba, raising questions about the administration’s ability to maintain party cohesion and deliver inclusive governance in the months ahead.
