Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang has summoned an emergency security council meeting following a fresh wave of gunmen attacks that have left at least 30 people dead in various communities over the past week.
The most recent violence struck on Thursday night in Nche Shwye Rishi community, Bassa Local Government Area, where gunmen stormed homes and killed five residents, including children.
Survivors described the assault as sudden and ruthless, with victims attacked while inside their houses.
Community leader Gata Moses condemned the killings as “barbaric and senseless,” while resident Nuhu Michael voiced deep frustration: “I don’t know why the terrorists keep probing hard, yet security agents fail to act decisively.”
The governor presided over the high-level meeting at the Executive Council Chamber, New Government House, Jos, on Friday.
Key participants included:
Major General Eyitayo Oyinlola (GOC 3 Division / Commander, Operation Enduring Peace)
CP Bassey Ewah (new State Commissioner of Police)
Deputy Governor Ngo Josephine Piyo
Secretary to the State Government Samuel Jatau
Heads of other security agencies
Governor Mutfwang has instructed security forces to: Ramp up operations in the affected zones
Bolster troop presence in vulnerable neighbouring communities
Track down and arrest the perpetrators for prosecution
The renewed bloodshed underscores the persistent insecurity plaguing parts of Plateau State, where farming communities remain frequent targets despite earlier military deployments and peace initiatives.
The state government expressed profound sorrow over the lives lost and reaffirmed its commitment to restoring calm.
The security council meeting was ongoing as reports surfaced, reflecting the gravity of the crisis and the urgent need for effective countermeasures.
